It is vital that children/young people are safe throughout their time in music therapy. I have a responsibility to follow correct procedures and inform the relevant agencies if I have any concerns of the young person’s safety or that of others too.
The aim of this safeguarding policy is to share with you the processes in place to protect children and young people, promoting their welfare, and recognising signs of abuse.
Abuse comes in a number forms: Physical Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Neglect, Exploitation. This list is not exhaustive.
As a therapist, I am responsible for recognising signs of abuse. I remind the child/young person that they are in a safe place and that they will be heard. It’s important children/young people do not feel judged and are allowed to communicate freely in whatever way they find easiest. I will remain calm and grounded.
It is mandatory for all therapists to have regular clinical supervision. This supervision allows me to take my work to another trained professional in order to receive support. It is my supervisor I would contact if I had any level of concern about the child/young persons wellbeing and safety.
I have had training and hold a certificate in Safeguarding Children and Young People, and a certificate in Prevent (recognising radicalisation, terrorism).
I keep this training up to date and refresh every two years.
Before beginning therapy with your child/young person (if appropriate), I explain to them that although our sessions are confidential, if I have any concerns about their safety/well-being, and of others, I will need to find someone else to help us.
I would then contact my supervisor, as well as other appropriate people, this may be parents, their teacher, SENCO or inclusion coordinators, doctors, or social services. Notetaking will be clear and precise.
Low risk: maintain usual therapy and use existing support. No safeguarding action. Concerns have been addressed.
Moderate: Safeguarding Protection Plan is/remains in place.
Severe Risk: Life may be in danger, risk of major injury, or serious physical or mental ill health. Call 999
These incidents need to be shared with my supervisor, alongside notifying relevant agencies including local authorities, social services, doctors, teachers.
Sharing these reports will follow all GDPR legislation (See Privacy Policy).
